Herpes testing may reveal higher risk of HIV

"Scientists have long known that someone with a herpes infection was at increased risk of getting HIV. While it had been thought that the two to three-fold increase in risk was due to the presence of sores and lesions on the skin which can increase the chance for HIV to get into the blood stream, scientists discovered last year that even people whose lesions had been treated are still at higher risk."

Governor's budget cuts kill HIV/AIDS prevention funding - Daily Democrat Online

"An area hit particularly hard by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's attempt to close a $26 billion budget deficit was programs to help prevent and treat acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

AIDS is a disease that attacks the infected immune system, as a result of HIV.

'Several of the programs related to HIV/AIDs have been cut,' Joseph Iser Yolo County health officer said. 'We're still looking at the actual costs and what we will loose at the county level.'"
